Kindergarten Readiness Brochure - Spanish


  • A child can enter kindergarten if they are 5 on or before August 31
  • A child can enter kindergarten at age 5 on or before August 31

A child can be more ready to succeed if they are able to or are aware of the following.
Shares and takes turns
Takes responsibility for self-help skills (washing hands, toileting, wiping nose)
Follows complex directions with two or more steps
Accepts responsibility for property and actions
Listens attentively without interrupting
Cleans up and puts away materials
Transitions from one activity to another easily
Attends to one task for more than 5 minute
Completes a task even with problems or distractions

Language Arts
Attentive to stories being read
Answers simple questions about a story with prompting and support
Offers alternate story plot suggestions to familiar stories
Has awareness of the parts of a book (cover, spine, title page including-author and illustrator)
Knows how to hold a book and turn pages
Recognizes and produces rhyming words
Identifies the sounds of letters 
Recognizes 10-15 letters upper and lower case
Has awareness of site words and begins to recognize them
Identifies name in print and begins to write name in print
Expresses thoughts, feelings, and ideas through spoken words, or pictures
Beginning to draw ideas using scribble, stick figures, or shapes and tell about it
Traces and copies letters
Categorizes objects (Animals, Foods, Clothing, etc) 

Route counts to 30 or higher
Recognizes Numbers 1-10
Writes/traces, copies numbers 1-10
Has concepts of number quantities (one-to-one correspondence, hand me three block)
Sorts by color, shape, and size
Creates and repeats simple 2-3 step patterns
Recognizes 9 geometric shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, oval, star, heart, diamond, cone)
Describes positions (in, out, beside, under, behind, between)
Builds block towers and copies a model
Has awareness of the concept greater than and less than          

Motor Skills
Demonstrates cutting a straight, a curved line and cutting out objects
Demonstrates jumping, hopping, skipping
Demonstrates a tripod hold for drawing or writing
